Which documents are accepted for Aadhaar update?

What is needed for Aadhaar date of birth update?

The required proof depends on the Aadhaar record and earlier proof. For resident Indians below 18 with declared or approximate date of birth, a birth certificate is mandatory.

Can I use a family member's address for Aadhaar update?

List IV provides an immediate-family-member Head of Family self-declaration for address borrowing. It is valid only for that purpose and for three months from issue.

A submitted document must be current, issued to the applicant, source-verifiable and accepted by its issuing authority for the claimed purpose. A PoI must show the applicant’s name and photograph. Names and dates of birth across documents must be consistent.

Name correction or name change

For standard spelling or data-entry correction, use an applicable current PoI showing the exact requested name. The Aadhaar name is copied from the supporting document.

First name or full name change	Gazette notification is listed for this purpose. A Third Gender / Transgender Identity Card or Certificate is also accepted for gender and full-name change.
Surname after marriage	Government Marriage Certificate. If it has no photo, also carry PoI with the old name and photo.
Surname after divorce	Family-court Divorce Decree. If it has no photo, also carry PoI with the old name and photo.
Minor name update through HoF	Birth Certificate or legal-guardianship document bearing the revised name; HoF process applies.
“Baby of …” first full-name update	Birth Certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.

Date of birth (DoB) update: choose the correct route

DoB updates have additional safeguards. The earlier document submitted to UIDAI and whether the DoB is declared, approximate or verified affect what is accepted.

Declared or approximate DoB; age 18+	One accepted DoB document from List IV.
Verified DoB based on Birth Certificate	Corrected Birth Certificate with the SAME Birth Registration Number (BRN) and same registrar, plus Annexure I (adult) or Annexure IA (child), as applicable.
Verified DoB based on another DoB proof	For adults, corrected version of that same valid document or a Birth Certificate, plus Annexure I (adult). If the earlier document is no longer valid, use Birth Certificate.
Operator entered a different DoB (operator error)	Request must match the DoB on the earlier submitted proof. Use that proof if still valid; otherwise Annexure II (adult) or Annexure IIA (child) may apply after UIDAI checks its record.
Subsequent DoB update	Birth Certificate, or corrected Birth Certificate with the same BRN and registrar if the earlier proof was a Birth Certificate, with applicable affidavit.
Aadhaar reactivation after invalid/fraudulent DoB proof	Full biometric update at the designated centre, genuine online-verifiable Birth Certificate (subject to listed exception), and applicable affidavit.

For a woman who changed her name after marriage, a pre-marriage DoB proof may be accepted with evidence of the name change. A foreign resident’s DoB update is limited to operator-error cases under the SOP.

Address update and Head of Family (HoF) route

Use a listed PoA when you have one. List IV also permits the HoF route when an individual does not have a PoA document.

The HoF must have a valid Aadhaar; a parent or legal guardian may be HoF.
Both parents’ Aadhaar numbers are normally required for HoF-based updates; where the person lives with one parent or a legal guardian, that person’s Aadhaar number may be given.
One parent or legal guardian must complete biometric authentication. The HoF address is used for the individual.
For immediate-family address borrowing, use the HoF self-declaration in the official PDF. It is valid only for this purpose and for three months.
